The Tasman/Sorell Priority Area is one of five priority areas under the Healthy Catchments & Coasts program.

The Tasman/Sorell Priority Area

About the Tasman Sorell Priority Area

Located within Tasman and Sorell Municipalities the Tasman/Sorell Priority Area extends from the Coal River across to Marion Bay, down the Tasman Peninsula and around Frederick Henry Bay to Seven Mile Beach. It takes in the towns of Richmond and Sorell, Dunalley and Nubeena as well as rural hamlets across both municipalities and a large swathe of agricultural and crown lands.

What are we doing?

In the Tasman/Sorell Priority Area we are leading a range of activities designed to protect and enhance natural values, working with Tasman and Sorell Councils and the community through a local NRM coordinator.

Progress so far

Since 2009 significant progress has been made in primary control of priority weeds on the Tasman Peninsula and on offshore islands.

Work underway in 2009/2010

During 2009/2010 extensive rehabilitation work is being undertaken in priority sections of the foreshore area of Pittwater/Orielton Lagoon Ramsar site. This work is being assisted by Australian Government funding specifically for rehabilitating the Ramsar site and its surrounds. During 2009/2010 we are building on progress during 2009 through:

  • Continuing control work for priority weeds on the Tasman Peninsula
  • Engaging the broader community in natural resource management activity, with a focus on Pittwater/Orielton Lagoon Ramsar wetland
  • Mapping the foreshore of Pittwater/Orielton Lagoon and developing a foreshore action plan
  • Undertake priority weed control and revegetation works around Pittwater/Orielton Lagoon foreshore
  • Building knowledge and capacity of land managers to improve soil health
  • Further investigating and planning the implementation of best practice stormwater management around Orielton Lagoon
