The Huon Priority Area

About the Huon Priority Area

Located within Huon Valley Municipality the Huon Priority Area includes most of the eastern half of the Huon Catchment.

It stretches from the top of Mountain River in the Southern foothills of Mt Wellington, down through to Huonville. It reaches across to Cygnet in the south-east and Geeveston in the south-west, and follows the Huon River down to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Heading down the Channel and around to Surveyor’s Bay it also takes in the area around Dover.

Comprising towns, rural hamlets, agricultural, forestry and crown lands, the area contains diverse flora and fauna, including rare and endangered animals, birds and plants, ancient forests, famous rivers and Aboriginal cultural heritage.

What are we doing?

In the Huon Priority Area we are working in partnership with Huon Valley Council and the Huon Valley community through a local NRM coordinator.

Progress So Far

Since 2009 significant progress has been made in implementing the Mountain River Rivercare plan. This has focussed on the removal of Crack willow from the river and its tributaries, and on associated revegetation. Community involvement has ensured the success of this work and the river system’s natural values are recovering well.

Other priority weed control works have also been conducted, including:

  • Control of weed outbreaks at Mountain River
  • Control of African feathergrass from Judbury to Franklin
  • Treatment of St John’s wort
  • Treatment of Crack willow along 400m of riverbank on a Mountain River tributary
  • Treatment of willow regrowth and associated revegetation maintenance and fill planting at Port Cygnet
  • Treatment of Pampas grass

Farmers in the Huon Catchment have also been supported in undertaking property planning and management through assistance with property mapping, extension advice and access to the latest information and on soil management.

Work underway in 2009/2010

During 2009/2010 activity is focusing on:

  • Improving land management practices, with a specific focus on soil health and soil carbon management
  • Increasing community knowledge and skills in relation to NRM
  • Reducing threats to Swift parrots and other EPBC-listed species through increasing native habitat under management
  • Protecting indentified priority natural assets through reducing the impact of Weeds of National Significance across 20ha
